Reliving my days as a Flasher

Last week I was able to spend several days (and the whole weekend) working on a Flash / Actionscript 3.0 prototype to demonstrate some UX and system behavior concepts at work.

It reminded me how much I enjoy coding (when it's not every day) and how much, in particular, I enjoy working in Flash and Actionscript. Sure - there are all the little quirks and annoyances that come with the package, weird legacy behaviors in the Flash player, a so-so debugging environment, lack of a great IDE... but what makes that all seem tiny is the instant gratification factor. Something which is greatly missing from my usual day-to-day work.

So - in memory of that brief window of fun... here are a few of my favorite flash bookmarks from delicious.

Take a gander at the this list of items from Amazon. Click the link and look for "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought." Now, if a guy were smart enough he'd turn it into "40 must-have items for the 40 year old virgin in your life." When I found this little gem it seemed almost too good to be true. Truly funny (in a sad, sad way). If the link doesn't work - or if the items happen to change - here's a summary of what came up for me.

Oh yeah - my 20 year class reunion is less than a month away - so if you're looking for any little gifts for me - you've got my wish list.

Jobs Throws Down with Adobe

Who cares if Microsoft has Flash Lite on their smartphones? The whole iPhone vs. Microsoft smartphone has much more to do with usability, stability and "it just works" philosophy. With the arrival of the iPhone SDK, the June software update and the coming wave of cool new applications via iTunes, Apple's offering will continue to dominate the smart phone / all-purpose pocket device for seasons to come.
And kudos to Jobs for demanding a Flash Player for iPhone that won't fill the device with hacked-up sludge.

Just about lost it

Last night after entering my website address (this one) in an online profile, I happened to click on the finished entry only to find that Technowannabe.com was out of commission. I really can't believe I let my domain name registration lapse. Duh!

Maybe it's the fact that I spent the last two weeks in Germany and am still somewhat suffering from jet lag... or maybe it's just laziness and blog-apathy;) Nah - I'm not going to let that happen.

During the next month and a half, I'll be back and forth to Germany 3 times and moving somewhere across town here at home because my landlord sold the house.

Now... I may be a bit slow on the draw the next few weeks. But I'm NOT letting this thing die;)

We've known it was coming for quite a while - but the reality is even sweeter than the rumor - which usually isn't the case. Go sign up for a Google account if you don't alrDocs & Spreadsheetsake Docs & Spreadsheets for a spin. You won't be a bit disappointed.

This is the Google-ized incarnation of Writely, the online word processing site I blogged a few months ago. Now it's spiffed up and ready to take on the world.

Eager to jump headlong into the glorious bounty that is Chicago's food culture, I was looking for local reviews and suggestions from real people when I ran across Yelp on a web 2.0-related blog.

Yelp's tagline is: Real People. Real Reviews. This is very much what you get here. Reviews of all types of local items of interest including, restaurants, nightlife, salons, shopping, services and more are served up by an active social networking community in a very nicely done web-2.0-ish package. Look for ratings of reviews, endorsements of reviewers, personal tidbits, messaging - it really is a virtual community.

This site is so nice and covers the restaurant scene so well that I'm going to have to find something else to blog about.

And, oh yes, if you're interested: here's a link to my profile on Yelp.

First Update from Elmhurst

As the few faithful readers can tell, the move from Knoxville to Elmhurst along with my new role at work has taken a huge toll on my ability to invest time in such lofty pursuits as blogging, e-mailing, sleeping or sleeping.

Let me start by saying that we love it here. The biggest impression after a month is that we live in a place with a ton of great amenities such as a brand-new public library which is huge and well-stocked (and has a Lavazza Espresso bar), a close walk to the Metra station, several nice downtown eateries, a killer old-school hobby shop, nice restored downtown movie theater and tons more. It's also interesting that although much of the bill for the quality of public services, parks, libraries and schools is footed by our many neighbors living in 1-2 million dollar homes, there is a very obvious lack of pretension here. It's a very nice blend of people - both old and new.

We've taken advantage of the close proximity to Chicago at least one day every weekend so far. In particular, we've already hit Chinatown three times.

Our furniture arrived this week and Tasha has done a killer job of putting everything in its place (providing there is room for it).

We're starting to have a real home here and it's nice to be somewhere I could see staying for a while.

Expect to hear much more from me in the coming weeks as we get settled in and I finish up huge project at work that will be finished next Friday.

A Knoxville Alien No More - Hello Elmhurst

It looks like I'll be signing off as the resident "Knoxville for newbies" blogger. Some of you already know I've been pretty much invisible on this front for the last month or so anyway. Sorry for the dead time. Now you know why.

So here's the scoop. My company has relocated us to the Chicago area and it looks like Elmhurst may be the perfect spot for us to land.

We'll be pulling out of town this weekend if all goes well and should be settled into some place by the end of next week. I'll be sure to post pictures, trip stories, snafus and anything else which may be of interest.

For now, wish us luck or pray for us - whatever thing you do and PLEASE include praying that we sell our house in Knoxville.
