Horn of Plenty... Knoxvillian or Not, It's Excellent Food
A recent article in the Metro Pulse asked, "Who gets to decide what's Knoxvillian?" The author's point seems to be that Knoxville is a diverse, progressive city which defies dietary classification: especially by outsiders. While there are some really good dining choices here in Knoxville, I'd be inclined to argue that there are really two types of food that could potentially "define" Knoxvillian cuisine.

One of them is the type of real, homestyle, green-beans-being-prepared-in-the-dining-area meal served up at Horn of Plenty and, I'm sure, several other under-the-radar establishments which don't normally rate on the local readers' polls. Horn of Plenty offers truly great food. Hearty, fresh, flavorful and most importantly, authentic something.
The other is unfortunately the more prevalent "upscale, casual dining" or "southern continental" food served at places like Puleo's Grille, and Green Hills Grille. I've been to both "Grilles" and a few others I'd lump into the same category and have walked away completely disappointed every time. It's like the food you get at a banquet, or a wedding dinner: it'll work because your starving and hopefully the company is good - but you wouldn't want to eat it again.
As a self-admitted Knoxville alien, it didn't take long to learn to avoid anything with "Grille" in the name.
Horn of Plenty, on the other hand, makes me want to do a jig in the hallway outside of my office.
Horn of Plenty is a bit hard to find the first time, but the effort will pay off in a big way.
