Many parents are just now catching wind of a phenomenon that is, in fact, several years old. In our house, I'd known about MySpace for some time - having discovered it when I was looking for a good blogging platform. At that time I simply saw it as an ugly boil on the backside of the web - crappy design, self-obsessed teens and overall lack of any content requiring more than an I.Q. of 85 to produce or digest. I moved on and forgot about it.
More recently we ran headlong into some of the issues surrounding the use of MySpace due to some misuse by a member of our family. Summary: big mess - trust broken - feelings hurt - 'nuff said.
One of the conditions allowing MySpace to foster the kind of garbage it does is the lack of understanding on the part of parents - most of whom have a difficult time figuring out the difference between an internet connection and the browser they use to surf the web. (note: if that sounds like you - please read this recent article from Wired.)
MacTheRipper allows Mac users to backup legally-owned DVDs to their hard drive for viewing or burning to a back up DVD. There are several of these applications in the wild, but they are highly targeted for destruction by "The Man." When a legitimate link is posted for download - it's best to get it while it's available - it may not be around for long. Get it here.
Update: RipDifferent is now the best place to download MacThe Ripper - the original site is down again.

In light of my previous post regarding junk foods I miss - I'm posting the link to a pretty cool compendium of fast food goodness past and present, including several I mentioned previously.

After my encounter with the Krystal chiks and the close resemblance to another favorite of mine, Chicken Littles from KFC, I started thinking of other junk food I miss.
Here's the list:
Can you believe that? It was so easy - cruising up to the Krystal drive-thru and confidently asking for a 3 chik combo. Who'd ever believe it?
Anyone who's visited a Radio Shack in the last 5 years knows the store has been struggling to keep its old niche while jumping into new market segments.

Warner Independent Pictures brings us what looks to be one of the most innovative films of the year with, A Scanner Darkly. Post CyberPunk styling and content woven together in a fascinating blend of live, human action and cel-shaded amination. Top this off with a few of this generation's Cyber-Punkiest actors and this should be an entertaining brew indeed.

Today I stumbled onto a great site for finding travel deals and for experiencing Web 2.0 up close and personal. Kayak is very adept at finding the lowest priced flights here in the U.S. and abroad.
Sign me up! If I could find the 800 number I'd be whipping out the plastic right now.
This article from the Washington Post gives some good background information on the company and its personality - but brings some potentially disturbing news about the future.
If you haven't had an In-N-Out burger, watch for the next weekend getaway fare to L.A. and jump in line; before it's too late.
